A bus carrying a number of people including Emma Stroud has been blown up by a bomb planted in her luggage by her son, Gilbert. Robin, investigating the case, is convinced that Gilbert is guilty. As he uncovers vital evidence, he is knocked unconscious by the boy and imprisoned and threatened with a terrible death.

Robin goes to Paris to try to find two highly insured emeralds belonging to Caroline Agoura, which ostensibly went overboard with her late husband, Paul. By working with Tou Tou, a clumsy Parisian second-story man, Robin learns that Agoura is not dead, is a vague but notorious smuggler, who uses the emeralds as collateral for his deals.

A heavily insured Shakespeare First Folio is stolen from London University. Robin Scott is hired to Investigate the theft. His probe points to a collector and a shady character named Begstone. Robin tricks the two men into a meeting, learns they had a deal, but neither has the folio.
