A Step Into The Past (2001)

A Step into the Past is a 2001 Hong Kong television series produced by TVB and based on Huang Yi's novel of the same Chinese title. The series tells the story of a 21st-century Hong Kong VIPPU officer who travels back in time to the Warring States period of ancient China. He is involved in a number of important historical events that leads to the first unification of China under the Qin Dynasty. The series' first original broadcast ran from 15 October to 7 December 2001 on the TVB Jade network in Hong Kong.

Episode 1
Episode 1: Episode 1 (Oct 15, 2001)
Secret agent HONG SIU LUNG and his colleagues are to provide security for the Exhibition of the First Emperor’s Bodyguard. His colleagues find that one life-size model of the soldiers very much looks like LUNG. LUNG claims that he can make a date with CHING, a stunningly beautiful Public Relations Officer and he even places a bet on this with his colleagues. CHING, however, turns him down. Tycoon LEE SIU CHIU is officiating at the Exhibition, during which a fanatic who is disguised as a journalist has sneaked into the exhibition centre. He has brought along with him loads of explosives. Both CHIU and CHING are held hostage. Luckily LUNG is there and he stops the crazy man just in time. CHING complains that LUNG has no intention of marrying her and that he has been looking for various excuses to reject her for the past 7 years. CHING makes a final attempt to propose marriage to LUNG.… ...

Episode 2: Episode 2 (Oct 16, 2001)
YAO, a hitman, is in a fight with his enemies and LUNG has rescued him by chance. LUNG realises he is now in the Chiu Empire and thus asks YAO to lead him back to the Qin Empire. YAO has taken him to the city of Handan instead. This night, LUNG follows YAO to a hut and overhears YIM PING and the people inside discussing how to kill YUEN JUNG. There LUNG also finds out that YAO is in fact a girl. YAO and LUNG see an old man in the street, who is being teased by a gang of knights. LUNG helps to drive the knights off. YAO wonders if that old man is JUNG. PING is going to poison JUNG but LUNG and YAO have turned up in time and spoiled PING’s plan. It is found that JUNG is a descendent of the Mo Sect. PING has been trying to steal one treasured object from JUNG, with which he can order people around. YAO suggests JUNG teach LUNG the renowned Mozhe Sword Techniques and JUNG promises. While JUNG is teaching LUNG, PING comes along.
Episode 3
Episode 3: Episode 3 (Oct 17, 2001)
JUNG and PING have had a terrible fight and both of them have got seriously hurt. YAO kills PING in order to get a special award. Before JUNG dies, he has passed a wooden sword and his treasured object on to LUNG. LUNG disapproves of YAO’s greed and selfishness, and thus decides to leave her. LUNG works as a blacksmith but can earn just a little money. Out of the blue, someone has prepared excellent food and accommodation for him and he knows for sure it is all arranged by YAO. By chance LUNG has assisted GREY BEARD to catch FONG, a member of the WOOs, and her bodyguard TAO. GREY BEARD is actually a thief and is hired to steal an emerald named ‘He’. LUNG is finally aware of the fact and releases FONG and TAO immediately. LUNG discovers that the emerald is used to save YING JING, the heir to the throne of the Qin Empire and therefore promises to help TAO to recover the emerald.… ...

LUNG knows CHUN is going to keep the genuine emerald. He thus exchanges the genuine emerald for the fake one. TAO brings LUNG back to the WOO’s Castle to meet his master WOO YING YUEN. FONG is not happy with LUNG as she thinks he has spoken ill of CHUN. LUNG explains that he swapped the genuine emerald for the fake one just for long-term advantages. YUEN has no choice but to try to believe it. CHUN presents the fake emerald to MUK, which makes MUK thrilled to bits. With his quick wit, LUNG has successfully proven the WOO’s innocence in front of EMPEROR CHIU, making MUK furious. YUEN thinks highly of LUNG for he is so clever that he can save the WOOs without doing YING JING any harm. But FONG is just so jealous of LUNG. PRINCE POON, the son of PRINCESS ANN, is teasing a girl in the street. Meanwhile LUNG passes by and has stopped him and given him a good telling-off.… ...

Episode 5: Episode 5 (Oct 19, 2001)
MUK blames CHUN for having not killed LUNG during the fight. He is going to take LUNG’s life in the forthcoming football match. YUEN can see that LUNG is really good at football and thus asks him to help train his guards, which makes FONG and her brother WAI very unhappy. FONG is going to play a trick on LUNG, and for this matter, she orders CHUN to buy some medicine for her. CHUN has bought her some poison instead. LUNG sneaks into JING’s house to have a look. There he meets TAO. LUNG claims that he is a secret agent working for LUI BUTT WAI, a prominent official of the Qin Empire. YUEN doubts it. Outwardly LUNG is busy training a group of footballers but in fact he is training a number of knights who will be skilful enough to rescue JING. FONG puts the medicine (the poison actually) into the soup for LUNG. She has carelessly dropped the bowl and the soup just spreads over the floor. A dog comes near and takes a sip of the soup.… ...
Episode 6
Episode 6: Episode 6 (Oct 22, 2001)
FONG can finally pass the screening test. She then urges LUNG to jump down the cliff. LUNG does what she says, which scares her half to death. FONG discovers she has been cheated by LUNG and flies into a fury. She even calls him ‘Bastard’. LUNG insists on teaching the modern football skills but both FONG and WAI doubt if it works. The day of the MUK versus WOO football match finally comes. POON and PRINCE KA have a bet on the outcome. POON’s mother ANN appears and everyone out there gets stunned by her beauty. TAK mocks POON, saying that his mother is too sexy. POON finds such comment very offensive and is outraged. LUNG’s team is winning in the first half of the match but CHUN means to break the rules. LUNG finds an excuse to take a rest. He then gets out of the court and joins TAO. The two of them immediately go to JING’s house to save him. Unfortunately they are trapped and do not succeed. Surprisingly, LUNG meets YAO there.… ...

MUK learns from CHUN that LUNG is quite a randy guy and has thought of a plan to deal with him. LUNG meets ANN in the market. Suddenly ANN’s horse goes crazy and LUNG has stopped it just in time. LUNG thinks there must be some strange goings-on. LUNG gives FONG a jade hairgrip, which makes her thrilled. But as soon as she finds out that ANN has asked him out for a date, she gets outraged and throws the hairgrip at LUNG. LUNG picks up the broken hairgrip and leaves. ANN is trying every possible way to seduce LUNG. Meanwhile, POON gets into the room and sees the scene. He is furious thinking that they are just too shameless. ANN instantly gives POON a slap. ANN believes LUNG is a real gentleman since he never takes sexual advantages of her. He did not even touch her when she was drunk. FONG thinks that LUNG and ANN have already had sex and thus burns with jealousy.… ...

POON appoints a few gangsters to attack LUNG but out of his expectation, LUNG can successfully drive out all of them. MUK tries to bribe LUNG with pretty women and grand mansions but LUNG turns him down without hesitation. MUK gets outraged. ANN asks LUNG to become POON’s master, which surprises LUNG a lot. FONG has mistakenly damaged the orchids that ANN gave LUNG. To make it up to LUNG, she turns to SINN for some new orchids. SINN reveals that she is marrying either the Prince of the Hon Empire or the Prince of the Ngai Empire. ANN wants POON to be LUNG’s apprentice but POON refuses. LUNG shows POON all his power, making POON so amazed. POON now looks up to LUNG a lot and really wants to learn from him. LUNG has got back the repaired hairgrip. TAO tells him that FONG has just sent him some orchids. TAO points out that FONG seems to be very fond of LUNG, which makes LUNG a bit worried. A war-horse is poisoned to death.… ...

Episode 9: Episode 9 (Oct 25, 2001)
That mysterious man is actually CHO CHOW DAO, who is extremely skilful at sword fighting. DAO asks the whereabouts of JUNG’s treasured object but LUNG has found loads of excuses to distract him. YAO is appointed to steal the treasured object from LUNG. LUNG gives SINN a nickname ‘RABBIT’ and calls himself ‘OX’. SINN is quite fond of him. ANN suggests LUNG leave Handan and explains to him that she does not know where CHU KATE and her son have been. LUNG, on the other hand, advises ANN to leave MUK. LUNG sneaks into MUK’s house at night. Luckily he is rescued by a lady there or else he would probably have been discovered by MUK. LUNG does not know that lady is KATE. TAK and KA go to see POON and challenge him to a fight. POON is beaten and gets seriously hurt. ANN looks after POON very carefully. He is immensely touched by ANN’s thoughtfulness. LUNG knows SINN has to return to the Palace the next day.… ...

Episode 10: Episode 10 (Oct 26, 2001)
FONG sees LUNG together with ANN and gets so angry. She means to drink herself into a stupor and CHUN comes to take sexual advantages of her. To protect FONG, LUNG has a fight with CHUN and has hit him severely. LUNG takes FONG to the riverside but FONG is so careless that she has fallen into the water. LUNG tries to restore her life by mouth-to-mouth respiration. CHUN proposes to FONG and asks for YUEN’s permission. He swears that he will leave MUK in the near future. YUEN does not really believe him. FONG thinks it is LUNG who has proposed to her and is thrilled to bits. CHUN has got something from KATE and he passes it on to YUEN. He suggests YUEN write a confidential letter to KATE. This has been discovered by EMPEROR CHIU but with their wit, LUNG and YUEN can finally explain it away. MUK is irked by this. FONG knows SINN is in love with a man and suggests SINN should let him know about it.… ...

Episode 11: Episode 11 (Oct 29, 2001)
SINN is now placed in a cottage. FONG knows SINN and LUNG are deeply attracted to each other and feels a bit sad about this. EMPEROR CHIU discovers that SINN has disappeared and CHUN immediately volunteers to look for her. CHUN follows FONG and have eventually found SINN. He claims that it is LUNG who has revealed SINN’s whereabouts. FONG is so angry that she instantly goes to ask LUNG whether he has done so. LUNG comes to know SINN’s true identity. He explains that he just regards SINN as his sister and there is nothing to do with love and romance. SINN is glad that she has had a great time with LUNG even though it does not last long. SINN knows FONG is in love with LUNG and suggests she go for it. FONG is touched by SINN’s encouragement. EMPEROR CHIU would like to give CHUN a reward. CHUN says he wants nothing but FONG. YUEN claims FONG and LUNG have been engaged already.… ...

Episode 12: Episode 12 (Oct 30, 2001)
YAO and LUNG have discovered some explanatory notes to the Mozhe Sword Techniques while they are practising sword fighting. MUK compels ANN to poison LUNG. ANN invites LUNG to dinner, during which LUNG says that he is not afraid of death and that he wants to finish all the delicious food there before he dies. ANN feels very regretful. On the day of the duel, MAJOR LEE has returned from the frontier to see how it is going. As far as CHUN can see, LUNG is as agile as before and does not seem to have been poisoned. LUNG is winning but CHUN is not going to resign himself to defeat. He tries to hit LUNG with a sneak attack but does not succeed. LUNG fights back and CHUN gets paralysed. LUNG has finally won. CHUN is expelled from MUK’s house and everyone makes fun of him. He is filled with utter hatred and his hatred for LUNG has grown even stronger than ever. LUNG tells FONG that he is not going to marry her and that his true love is YAO.… ...

Episode 13: Episode 13 (Oct 31, 2001)
SINN does not show a happy face on her wedding day. ANN much sympathises with her. MUK goes to see ANN off and reminds her to get “Lu’s Memoir”. Though POON is already back to MUK’s house, ANN can still feel tremendous stress. FONG has left home and on her way, she meets CHUN, who looks so down. She gives him encouragement and CHUN suggests she go with him. Inside a post, LUNG discovers that TAK, who has been with him on the way, has put some toxic inside the soup. This night, TAK sneaks into SINN’s bedroom and is caught by LUNG. TAK’s mother LADY YUAN confesses that it is all planned by her and her brother SHUN. They say they mean to wrong LUNG so that he cannot return to the Chiu Empire. LADY YUAN even persuades LUNG to help kill EMPEROR NGAI. SINN discovers the general who has been escorting her is LUNG. She blames LUNG for having not fulfilled his promise to save her.… ...

Episode 14: Episode 14 (Nov 01, 2001)
CHUN admires LAO and would like to be a follower of his. He then bids farewell to FONG. LUNG and SINN have finally arrived at the City of Daliang. SHUN and his guard MAO come to greet their arrival. Right Honourable LUNG YEUNG is hurry to receive his master CHOW HIN and HIN’s younger apprentice KUM CHANG. Along the way YEUNG has a quarrel with SHUN but LUNG can finally settle the dispute. YEUNG thus has a very good impression of LUNG. LUNG claims that he knows SHUN’s plot and states that he is longing to work for SHUN. SHUN doubts so. CHUN meets LAO again. He asks to become LAO’s apprentice but LAO refuses and just keeps teasing him. FONG goes along with CHUN to see LAO. CHUN is overjoyed. LUNG has come up with an idea as to how to find out “Lu’s Memoir”. Along the riverside, LUNG meets a girl who very much looks like CHING. He cannot help but follow that girl. However, she has suddenly disappeared.… ...
Episode 15
Episode 15: Episode 15 (Nov 02, 2001)
SHUN suspects LUNG is the thief and decides to search the whole place. Inside SINN’s bedroom he finds LUNG who is naked. LUNG pretends that he has an affair with SINN. He begs for SHUN’s forgiveness and promises to take up the job of assassinating EMPEROR NGAI. SHUN therefore lets him off. FONG and CHUN have prepared excellent food and accommodation for LAO so as to please him. LAO is happy about their arrangement. He states that CHUN needs to fulfill a few criteria in order to become his apprentice, namely, jumping off the cliff and leaving his body inside a barrel of urine and faeces for a day. Finally CHUN does what LAO wants. LUNG goes to get back the Memoir. He supposes CHANG is YEUNG’s wife and feels very disappointed. CHUN needs to wash up and FONG just accompanies him to the waterfall nearby. FONG looks stunningly beautiful as she appears beside the waterfall. LAO is madly attracted to her.… ...
Episode 16
Episode 16: Episode 16 (Nov 05, 2001)
YEUNG invites LUNG and ANN to attend the forum which is hosted by CHANG. LUNG is thrilled to bits when he knows that YEUNG and CHANG are not a couple. During the forum, LUNG meets many prominent historical figures such as HON FAY and LEE SZE. He feels just so excited to see them. He even suggests SZE go to serve the Qin Empire. LUNG’s political views are so innovative, which have surprised everyone there. CHANG is therefore very impressed by him. LUNG finds an excuse to leave the forum so that he can get back the Memoir. He passes the Memoir on to ANN straightaway. ANN pretends to be drunk and takes it as an excuse to get away. LUNG and ANN are so surprised to find that SINN has been brought to the Ngai Palace. LUNG recommends ANN to keep the Memoir and leave first. And in a minute, he is going to rescue SINN. The Prince of Ngai does not respect SINN and keeps sexually harassing her.… ...
Episode 17
Episode 17: Episode 17 (Nov 06, 2001)
SINN has got a fever and is really weak. Nobody knows how to help her. LUNG remembers there is some anti-biotic inside his little communication apparatus. CHANG can feel LUNG’s love but finally rejects him only for the sake of SINN. SZE has successfully borrowed food for his armies from YEUNG and is going to bid farewell. He offers to escort LUNG and SINN out of the Ngai Empire. SZE hides them inside a carriage but they are discovered by MAO eventually. LUNG does not want to cause SZE any trouble, so he and SINN leave at once. LUNG is hurt by an arrow. He has no choice but to jump down the cliff with SINN. LUNG and SINN have arrived at the Stone Village. There they meet the TANGs family and unfortunately have caught them in trouble. The TANGs are even killed later on. YIK and JUN, who are members of the TANGs, return home and find their family are all dead. They are extremely sad and cry their eyes out.… ...
Episode 18
Episode 18: Episode 18 (Nov 07, 2001)
MUK discovers that the Memoir is just a fake copy and gets furious. ANN passes the real Memoir on to POON and urges him to give it to LUNG. She then breaks the bridge apart to prevent MUK from getting close. POON goes back home and finds ANN has been tortured almost to death. He is sad and angry. LUNG is so surprised to hear about ANN’s death when he returns to WOO’s house. POON goes to see MUK to seek revenge but is caught. LUNG gives away the Memoir and MUK releases POON. LUNG subdues MUK and makes him reveal the whereabouts of KATE and her son. MUK leads LUNG into the cellar, where KATE and JING have long been kept. JING is in fact a coward and LUNG gets so disappointed in him. MUK hurts JING and has successfully fled away. Before he goes, he sets fire to the cellar in order to kill LUNG, KATE and JING. KATE is not at all scared. The three of them can finally get out of the cellar but JING dies later on.… ...

Episode 19: Episode 19 (Nov 08, 2001)
LUNG and POON go to the Cow village to find JING. There they discover JING is dead already. LUNG feels extremely upset about the news. KATE notices POON’s jade ring and mistakes him for JING. LUNG suggests POON disguise himself as JING. He analyses all the advantages and disadvantages of his plan. Others can do nothing but agree with him. YAO has saved a girl from the hands of CHOW PING. This girl is in fact FONG. FONG is going to commit suicide but luckily YAO has stopped her in time. YAO explains that LUNG refuses to marry FONG not because he does not love her but because of some other reasons. FONG misses LUNG so much. YAO and FONG have already reached the Qin territory. There they see LUNG who is escorting KATE and JING back to their country. FONG spots LUNG amongst the crowd and instantly all sorts of feelings well up in her heart. She leaves sadly at the end.… ...

Episode 20: Episode 20 (Nov 09, 2001)
EMPEROR QIN gives KATE a distinguished title ‘LADY ELEGANT’ and appoints LUNG to a significant post. YUEN asks for retirement and EMPEROR QIN agrees. EMPEROR QIN’s second son PRINCE SING and Right Honourable YEUNG TSUEN are afraid that LUNG will grow bigger and bigger. LUI invites LUNG and JING to dinner, during which they meet CHUN again, who calls himself LAO. CHUN has even become one of LUI’s guests now. LUNG has a meeting with CHUN and CHUN reveals how he has killed the real LAO. He promises LUNG that he will help JING to secure the throne. LUNG does not really believe him. TAK comes to the Qin Empire as a representative from the Chiu Empire to greet JING’s return. TAK points out that is not the real JING. EMPEROR QIN knew right from the beginning that the real JING was brought up in a cottage. He does not believe TAK and urges TAK to leave. TAK meets JING (POON) inside the Qin Palace and has immediately come up with an idea.… ...

Episode 21: Episode 21 (Nov 12, 2001)
EMPEROR QIN suddenly collapses. All ministers are worried about his health and they believe it is due to the fact that EMPEROR QIN has had too many sexual activities recently. LUNG gets aware that EMPEROR QIN has lumbago during rainy seasons. LUNG then offers to massage his feet so as to relieve his pain. EMPEROR QIN finds it works and thus thinks highly of LUNG. LUI knows that SINN has eloped with LUNG and he fears this will affect JING. He suggests LUNG should marry SINN. It is SINN’s 18th birthday. LUNG has given her a big birthday cake and tells her to make a wish. LUNG feels a little upset when he hears about SINN’s birthday wish. KATE disguises herself as a maid and goes to see LUI. She states she wants to stay with LUI but is rejected. LUI gives her a slap and warns her this is going to destroy JING’s future. KATE comes to realise she is just a tool of LUI’s and feels heartbroken. KATE is going to commit suicide.… ...
Episode 22
Episode 22: Episode 22 (Nov 13, 2001)
LUNG is much worried about how to catch MUK. LAO reveals that MUK is in fact an illegitimate son of Right Honourable TSUN SUN who is from the Chor Empire. LUNG doubts it. TAO suggests that LUNG may disguise himself as TUNG HONG, a horse-lover and a citizen of the Chor Empire and that through selling and buying of horses, LUNG can approach MUK. LUNG meets SZE again in LUI’s house. He promises he will seek a chance to recommend SZE to JING. SZE feels so grateful. SINN gives LUNG a lucky charm. Her eyes are full of love for him. LUNG is touched but dare not promise her anything. FONG wants to kill LAO and has decided to hire YAO as the hitman. In order to get more money, FONG has become a hired killer as well. It is the first time FONG has ever been involved in a murder. She is so nervous and clumsy that she nearly kills YAO. KATE has cooked a meal for LUI but LUI has not turned up at last.… ...
Episode 23
Episode 23: Episode 23 (Nov 14, 2001)
MUK invites HONG (LUNG) to dinner, during which he suddenly points out that is not the real HONG. LUNG is scared to death and quickly shows MUK a confidential letter. As soon as MUK has read the letter, he puts all his doubts aside. CHANG and LUNG meet again in the garden. LUNG releases all the fireflies he has caught. Now that thousands of fireflies are dancing around CHANG, CHANG gets stunned and amazed. HIN suggests CHANG should give up on LUNG and stay with HONG. MUK secretly goes to present the sacrificial offerings to the ghosts and evil spirits around the hill area. LUNG has come up with a plan at last. CHANG asks LUNG out for a date and LUNG promises at once. LUNG has added some colour to CHANG’s painting, which greatly amazes CHANG. On their way home, CHANG has hurt her leg and cannot move. LUNG just takes her in his arms and the two of them begin to head back home.… ...

Episode 24: Episode 24 (Nov 15, 2001)
CHANG comes to know that she has been used by LUNG to trap MUK. She leaves angrily. SINN wants the same piece of red cloth that YUNG has just found. YUNG is not happy with JUN for his sharp tongue and decides to purchase all the red cloth there. YUNG learns of LUNG’s identity from LUI. She goes to visit SINN with some red cloth and offers to design a wedding gown for SINN. She says she very much appreciates SINN’s determination to find her true love. LAO persuades KATE to discriminate against all those who hold different views from her own. KATE decides to recommend LAO to EMPEROR QIN for a significant post. JING, on the other hand, recommends LUNG and LUI just agrees with him. LUI realises LAO’s burning ambition and reminds him that he should play his own part. SINN discovers a confidential letter, from which she learns that someone is going to kill LUNG. LAO guesses SINN has already discovered his plot and is going to take her life.… ...
Episode 25
Episode 25: Episode 25 (Nov 16, 2001)
LUNG is totally furious at LUI’s house and has left the place a mess. YIK sees LUNG has lost his control. To prevent him from going ever madder, YIK gives him a hit to knock him out. LUNG vows to find out the murderer of SINN and requests EMPEROR QIN’s permission to search LUI’s house. Inside the garden, LUNG finds some oddments of SINN’s dress and the little rabbit that YUNG gave her. He suspects 8 people including LAO and YUNG are involved in the murder of SINN as they fail to prove they were not on the scene. LAO discovers SINN’s hairgrip and has come up with an idea. LAO points out that the carriage driver is rather suspicious. Shortly afterwards, LUNG finds SINN’s hairgrip inside the carriage. He flies into a fury and wants to kill the driver at once. LUNG refuses to accept a significant post and KATE again recommends LAO to EMPEROR QIN. KATE asks EMPEROR QIN to have a trip with her to Mt.… ...

Episode 26: Episode 26 (Nov 19, 2001)
A crazy man has got in when KATE is having a bath. To ensure KATE’s security, EMPEROR QIN agrees to appoint LAO to the post of Guard-in-chief. LUNG fears that JING will sooner or later become a tyrant. He hopes the doctrines of Confucius and Mencius can help exert a favourable influence on JING’s character and therefore invites CHANG to be JING’s teacher. CHANG promises later on. LUNG tells CHANG that she very much looks like his ex-girlfriend. CHANG feels a bit down when she hears about that. EMPEROR QIN has claimed JING to be the heir to the throne. SING and TSUEN think it is compulsory for JING to prove that he is the offspring of QIN. KATE tells JING that QIN is really his father and that there is nothing to worry about. JING just acts relaxed. LUNG suggests having a blood test. They do it and finally prove that JING is the son of QIN. LUI is of course furious with the result.… ...

LUNG can see that LAO is getting more and more ambitious. To play it safe, he suggests weakening LAO’s power. LAO tells KATE that JING is going to weaken his power. KATE then tries to find a way to cope with it. KATE persuades EMPEROR QIN to give CHANG an honour for her chastity, which is strongly opposed by LUNG. CHANG asks LUNG why he dislikes KATE’s idea but LUNG does not say a word. HIN suggests LUNG should reveal his love to CHANG if he is really fond of her. LUNG discloses to CHANG that he comes from the modern world but CHANG does not believe what he says. She thinks LUNG is just looking for an excuse to turn her down. HIN somewhat believes LUNG and decides to do a test to see if it is true. EMPEROR QIN suspects KATE and LUI are still carrying on an affair. LAO therefore is going to make LUI a scapegoat. Episode 28: Episode 28 (Nov 21, 2001)
LUNG sees that EMPEROR QIN’s lips and fingertips have both turned black and can tell immediately that he has been poisoned. He even knows for sure it is done by LUI. LUI holds KATE closely in his arms in front of EMPEROR QIN. QIN is finally outraged to death and JING has become the new king. LUNG has got his communication device in his hands and is ready to fly back to the modern world. However, the device is running out of battery power, which means he cannot return to where he comes from. He is so upset and keeps yelling on the summit of the mountain. LUNG urges YIK to have a look at the Memoir and see whether there is any item mentioning things related to electricity or even sulphuric acid. However, they find nothing at the end of the day. LUI has already worked out a new staff list, according to which, all his followers will get promoted. JING is not happy with this.… ...

Episode 29: Episode 29 (Nov 22, 2001)
LUNG and CHANG are doing two experiments respectively – LUNG is making a copper wire to see if it is possible to generate electricity from lightning flashes while CHANG is looking into the likelihood of turning sulphur into sulphuric acid. JING is encouraged by SZE and is getting more and more eager to introduce political reforms. LUI does not support him, nevertheless, making him very upset. JING and a eunuch get out of the Palace to chill out, during which they have a quibble with YUNG. YUNG has put some clothes on sale in a shop but she finds that the clothes pattern has been amended without her permission. She is very angry and goes to argue with the shop owner. She cannot get back what she wants after all. JING is willing to from a business partnership with YUNG and the two of them are planning to run a shop, which makes JUN so jealous. LUNG is astonished when he finds that YUNG’s partner is JING.… ...
Episode 30
Episode 30: Episode 30 (Nov 23, 2001)
LUNG and LAO go to find JING respectively. LUNG and CHANG have discovered JING when he is helping a poor girl bury her dead father. But just a minute later, JING vanishes again without a trace. JING is robbed of his wallet and thus has lost all his money. He feels so cold and hungry that he has finally stolen a bun. He is caught and sent to a government office for trial. There he is beaten up and later on is even sent to do coolie work. JING is dumped at the unmarked graveyard after he has been beaten unconscious. The late EMPEROR QIN’s birthday is coming soon – just in three days’ time – and LUI fears that JING cannot come back in time to attend the memorial service. JING has been tortured severely and comes to understand how much authority and power would mean to him. Everyone at the memorial service is waiting for JING but he has not turned up.… ...

Episode 31: Episode 31 (Nov 26, 2001)
LUNG has planned for long to go back to the modern world. He knows that he is going to leave one day and that he should not have given CHANG any false hope. YIK has misunderstood LUNG, however. CHANG learns from books that sulphuric acid is a particular chemical substance and decides to go uphill to look for some. HIN does not know why she has to do this. LUNG gets deeply touched by CHANG’s thoughtfulness but feels so sorry about all the trouble he has caused. JING is considering assigning a more important post to SZE and is afraid that LUI will show strong opposition to this. LUNG says they can ask for LAO’s support. JING suggests to LAO that KATE should participate in the administration of state affairs. JING and KATE collaborate with each other and have implemented a number of plans, including SZE’s promotion and tax reduction. They have also declined LUI’s proposal to repair the old sewers.… ...
Episode 32
Episode 32: Episode 32 (Nov 27, 2001)
YAO gets astonished as she knows that her master needs her to kill LUNG. LAO informs LUNG that SING has gone to the city of Xianyang to meet LUI and that LUI has already found out JING is not his son. LUNG reckons LUI must be plotting a rebellion. FONG follows YAO all the way to a jungle and has obstructed YAO’s action. As a result, YAO gets seriously injured. SING and a huge crowd of bodyguards and soldiers have arrived to kill JING. LAO and his bodyguards come along just in time and have successfully caught SING. Meanwhile, 3 hitmen jump out of the coffins to stab LUNG. LAO claims he needs to protect JING and takes it as an excuse to leave the vault. The hitmen have stabbed LUNG in the stomach. LUNG is bleeding profusely. YAO and FONG are so worried about LUNG and have tried their very best to kill the hitmen. LUNG has lost consciousness. YAO and FONG feel so helpless. YIK finds the dying LUNG by the door.… ...
Episode 33
Episode 33: Episode 33 (Nov 28, 2001)
SING is made a scapegoat. He faces the criminal charge of treason and is going to bear all the responsibility, only for the sake of his family. LUI soon feels relieved. YAO’s master has sent a hitman to kill YAO but luckily she has managed to escape. CHANG has been overseeing LUNG. She swears that she would give the world if LUNG could recover. LUNG suddenly wakes up. CHANG is overjoyed and bursts into tears. YIK persuades YUNG to leave JUN, which irks JUN. JING has decided to execute SING and all his relatives. LUNG, though still recuperating, goes to meet JING and asks for a pardon on SING’s behalf. JING refuses, nevertheless. LUNG reckons that JING has become increasingly tyrannical. YIK needs LUNG to go uphill with him. He then asks LUNG to take out his communication device to charge the battery. YIK has been using goldfish to conduct experiments on electricity.… ...
Episode 34
Episode 34: Episode 34 (Nov 29, 2001)
LUNG remembers what DR. WU has said and begins to work out the reason why JING’s reflection could not be seen in the mirror. He feels an urgent need to find a solution. A meteorite has fallen from the sky, causing panic among the government officials. But LUNG points out that it is a good omen. LUI cannot achieve what he sets out to do. The Chiu Empire starts to invade the Qin Empire. Both LUI and LAO ask for the chance to go out to battle. JING has no choice but to let WONG, LAO and LUNG have a competition and the champion will be leading the armies. CHANG’s former husband died in the war and she is afraid that LUNG would follow in his footsteps. LAO has spent all his time practising and improving his sword fighting skills. KATE dare not let him know that she is pregnant. On the day of the competition, LAO has lost much of his energy after he has taken the medicine provided by KATE. He is extremely angry with KATE.… ...

Episode 35: Episode 35 (Nov 30, 2001)
LUNG proposes to CHANG as he finds that she is leaving the Qin Empire. CHANG gets touched. LUNG has been appointed the General-in-chief and is heading for the City of Zui to fight against the armies from the Chiu Empire. YAO and FONG plan to go to the Chai Empire. They then pretend to be a couple and ask FUNG, the person in charge of a troupe, to give them a lift. The lead actress of the troupe FAYE has gone to get married without informing FUNG. FUNG finds that FONG and FAYE look very alike and thus asks FONG to substitute for FAYE. LUI reports that a riot has broken out in an eastern city and suggests WONG go there to put down the rebellion first and head for the City of Zui afterwards. JING does not have a better idea and therefore agrees. MOOK invites LUNG to have a drink. They have had a great time but it also marks the end of the their friendship. LUNG is afraid that WONG’s armies may not arrive in time.… ...

Episode 36: Episode 36 (Dec 03, 2001)
LUNG sneaks into Ngai’s barracks but is discovered by some of the Ngai soldiers. He has to flee away at once and at last he is rescued by YEUNG. Meanwhile, SHUN and a group of soldiers have come and ask to search the place. SHUN claims it is EMPEROR NGAI’s order, so YEUNG cannot turn him down. FONG and YAO see a man floating in the sea. They go to save him and find that it is LUNG. FONG claims that she is FAYE and that she does not know LUNG. She actually means to hide her true identity. LUI keeps mocking JING saying that he is going to have an illegitimate baby brother. JING is angry and orders the imperial physician to carry out a medical check-up for KATE. The imperial physician certifies that KATE is pregnant. JING asks LAO to escort LUI to the Great Wall and needs him to seek a chance to kill LUI. JING forces KATE to abort her baby. JING feels so shocked when he is informed that LAO has failed to assassinate LUI.… ...

Episode 37: Episode 37 (Dec 04, 2001)
KATE tells LAO that she is pregnant, which makes him believe that he still has to hold on, just for the sake of their baby. LAO knows JING’s true identity and has made a threat to disclose the secret in order to ensure his family’s safety. FONG cannot concentrate and has made lots of mistakes when practising dancing. LUNG teaches FONG some basic techniques of Spanish dancing and their relationship has improved a lot since then. A hitman suddenly appears while FONG is giving a performance to EMPEROR CHAI. The hitman targets EMPEROR CHAI but has hurt FONG accidentally. FONG is dying and can no longer hide her affection for LUNG. She finally confesses her love to him. LUNG promises he will marry her after her recovery. LUNG guesses that TIN DAN, an official working for the Chai Empire, is the real plotter of the assassination. He decides to sneak into DAN’s house to have a look.… ...
Episode 38
Episode 38: Episode 38 (Dec 05, 2001)
JING is getting increasingly ambitious. He plans to defeat the other 6 empires and unify them into one whole nation. JING has taken away KATE’s new-born baby and kills it in the first instant. KATE is heartbroken while LAO gets furious. LAO has caught JING and the two of them are now heading back to the Palace. LAO wants to kill JING along the way but does not succeed. JING and KO have jumped off the cliff. LUNG does not feel at ease. He looks at the mirror and finds that his reflection is becoming blurred. He feels so scared. KATE’s baby is still alive and when LAO shows her the child, KATE is thrilled to bits. She then finds that the baby killed by JING is not her child. LUI notices that the relationship between JING and KATE has improved a lot and he knows there must be some goings-on. LAO has found the bodies of JING and KO and feels relieved. CHANG learns that LUNG is still alive and that he is returning.… ...
Episode 39
Episode 39: Episode 39 (Dec 06, 2001)
The fake JING blames LUNG for the fall of the City Zui. LUI, together with a troop of soldiers, has arrived to catch LUNG. LUNG is accused of ganging up with MOOK against the emperor. LUNG has a plan in his head and does not say a word defending himself. LUNG reveals to LUI that the existing EMPEROR QIN is just a fake one and promises to help him wipe the fake JING out. LUI doubts it. During the night, LUI visits the fake JING and meets YUNG on the way. He has then come up with a plan. LUNG suddenly appears in LAO’s house and tells LAO that LUI is going to kill the emperor during the coronation. He promises LAO that he will protect JING and can ensure his safety if CHANG is released. LUI has successfully killed the fake JING. When LUNG has just handed the real JING over to LAO, FONG suddenly appears and she is actually coming to kill LAO. LAO comes to realise it is just a plot and immediately caught FONG.… ...
Episode 40
Episode 40: Episode 40 (Dec 07, 2001)
WONG changes sides and turns against LUI. LUI is so shocked. JING has taken control over everything now and has lots of plans in his head. LUI is kept in the prison. JING means to disclose his true identity, which totally infuriates LUI. JING forces LUI to drink a glass of poisonous wine and LUI dies straightaway. JING would like to give LUNG an award but LUNG dare not accept it. JING hangs KATE’s baby up in the square and hopes this would help to lure LAO back. LAO finally appears and JING instantly kills the baby in front of KATE and LAO. LUNG much sympathises with them but cannot help it anyway. FONG thinks that she does not deserve LUNG’s love as she has already lost her virginity. She has written LUNG a letter before she goes. LUNG goes to stop her after reading the letter. He reveals his love to her but FONG is not moved. LUNG does not want to lose FONG and says to her that he loves her in English.… ...
